Instant messaging and video calls are things that many of us enjoy in our everyday lives. It’s become more accessible thanks to the various apps and programs that allow us to do these things. However, before all these instant messaging apps and platforms, there were only a handful of ways we could do this. Skype happens to be one of the first few ways that people could instant message and make video calls to those as far as half a world away–so much so that it’s become its own verb. With that in mind, we’ll teach you how to use one of the earliest instant messaging programs out there: Skype.

1To be able to use Skype messenger, you first have to open the program.
Look for the icon (as shown below) on your desktop or start menu and then click on it.
Note: If you don’t have Skype on your desktop computer, you can always download it. Simply go to https://www.skype.com/en/ and look for the option that allows you to download the program. As soon as it’s downloaded on your computer, just click on the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
2If this is your first time logging in, enter your account details or create a new account (simply select the option that allows you to do so and follow the instructions).
3Once you open the program and you’re logged in, you will find yourself on a screen that looks a lot like this:
4Click on the “Chat” button to open the chat menu. (An image of this button–highlighted in blue–can be found below)

5After selecting the Chat menu, look for the button that says “New Chat” and click on it. (An example of this button can be found below)
6Clicking on the “New Chat” button will open a drop-down menu, as what you can see below.

7A window will pop up showing you your contacts. Select the contact you want to message.
8A chat window that looks similar to the one shown below will appear.

Type your message in the space that’s labeled “Type a message,” and then press the enter button once you’re done.
9Congratulations! You’ve sent a message using Skype messenger from your computer desktop!
