Step # | Action |
1 | Before you go ahead and use your mobile data to connect to the internet, you’ll need a few things first. One of the most essential things would be to have a phone with a mobile data plan. You will also need a desktop computer that can access WiFi connections. |
2 | To get started, you first need to ensure that your mobile data is activated on your phone. Then, you can begin setting up your phone’s mobile data hotspot. We’ll teach you how to do this from both an Android phone and an iPhone. For those with Android phones who want to create what is called a “wireless hotspot,” you first need to open your phone’s settings (the icon with the gear). |
3 | Once you open your phone’s Settings application, look for the option that says “Network and Internet” or “Connections” and tap on it. (An example of this can be seen below) |
4 | You will then find yourself at a window that looks much like what is pictured below. Look for the option that says “Mobile Hotspot and Tethering” (or “Advanced” in other Android phones) and select it. |
5 | On the “Mobile Hotspot and Tethering” screen, you will find an option labeled “WiFi Hotspot,” “Portable Hotspot,” or something similar. Beside this option, you will find a slider next to it. Tap on it to activate your mobile data hotspot and begin its setup. |
6 | Here, you will then be able to set up more specific details pertaining to your mobile data hotspot, such as the name of your WiFi hotspot and its password. Set it up according to your preference. |
7 | If you are an Apple iPhone user, activating and setting up your mobile data hotspot is similar to how you would do on an Android. You’ll first need to go to your iPhone’s settings (the application with a gear). |
8 | You will find yourself on a screen similar to what’s shown below. Look for and tap on the option that says “Personal Hotspot.” |
9 | Upon tapping the “Personal Hotspot” option, you’ll find yourself on a screen with a slider next to an option that says “Allow Others to Join.” Tap on the slider to make your mobile hotspot open to others to allow them to connect. |
10 | On the same “Personal Hotspot” screen, you’ll find an option that says password. This allows you to set up the password of your mobile hotspot–which shares the same name as your phone. Input whatever password you wish. |
11 | Now that your mobile hotspot is set up and activated, it’s time to connect your desktop computer to the hotspot. To do this, go to your desktop’s taskbar and go to the lower right-hand corner. |
12 | You will find an icon that looks like a globe (as shown below). Click/double-click on it to open the WiFi connection menu. |
13 | After the WiFi connection menu pops up, look for the corresponding WiFi connection coming from your phone’s mobile data hotspot. |
14 | Select it and click on the option that says “Connect.” |
15. | Congratulations! You’ve connected to the internet from your desktop using a mobile data hotspot from your cell phone! |
Conclusion | |
At present, WiFi connections are the default way that most people use to connect to the internet. Unfortunately, sometimes the WiFi connections in your home may not be very reliable, such as when the service provider is undergoing maintenance, or the connection isn’t as good. Fortunately, there is a way to work around this. You can still create a WiFi connection for your desktop to use. However, this time it’s coming from your phone. All you need to do is set up the mobile hotspot and activate it from your phone. Then, just go to your desktop, open the WiFi connections menu, and look for the WiFi connection that corresponds to your mobile data hotspot! Doing all that sounds simple enough, right? That’s because it usually is! However, for one reason or another, some still find this entire process confusing. As much as it might seem unusual, it’s something that’s perfectly acceptable because these processes may take some time to learn when it comes to some people.
